Magnesium: The Mineral That Helps the Body Keep Its Rhythm

Magnesium does not create energy. It helps the body use the energy it already has.

Magnesium is involved in more than 300 enzyme systems. It supports energy metabolism, muscle contraction, nerve signalling, bone structure, DNA synthesis, glucose regulation and normal cardiac rhythm. In intensive care medicine, electrolyte balance is never a minor detail. It is part of the body's operating system.

For longevity medicine, magnesium matters because healthspan depends on resilient fundamentals: stable sleep, appropriate muscle function, metabolic regulation, blood-pressure control and recovery capacity. Magnesium is not a shortcut. It is a foundational nutrient.

Who may benefit from reviewing magnesium intake?

A review is particularly reasonable for people with a diet low in legumes, leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds and whole grains; for those using proton-pump inhibitors or certain diuretics; and for individuals with persistent gastrointestinal losses, high alcohol intake or medically diagnosed kidney-related issues.

Low magnesium intake may contribute to fatigue, cramps, weakness, disturbed sleep or palpitations, but these symptoms are nonspecific. They should not be self-diagnosed as magnesium deficiency. A clinical assessment matters, especially when symptoms are persistent or significant.

What dose is appropriate?

For healthy adults, the recommended total daily intake from food, drinks and supplements is generally:

Food should remain the primary source. Useful dietary contributors include pumpkin seeds, almonds, cashews, spinach, beans, edamame and whole grains.

When supplementation is appropriate, I usually favour a conservative approach: 100–200 mg of elemental magnesium in the evening, then reassess tolerance and need. The upper intake level for magnesium from supplements and medicines is generally 350 mg daily for adults, unless a physician recommends otherwise for a specific indication.

The form matters. Magnesium glycinate is often well tolerated. Magnesium citrate can be useful where constipation is present, but may loosen stools. Magnesium oxide is less well absorbed and more likely to cause gastrointestinal effects.

Important safety points

Magnesium supplements require caution in people with impaired kidney function, as the kidneys remove excess magnesium. High supplemental doses can cause diarrhoea, nausea, low blood pressure, muscle weakness and, in severe cases, cardiac rhythm disturbances.

Magnesium can also reduce the absorption of certain medicines, including tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics, as well as oral bisphosphonates. Timing must therefore be discussed with a physician or pharmacist.

Always check with your physician before starting magnesium, particularly if you have kidney disease, take regular medication, are pregnant, or have unexplained palpitations, weakness or severe cramps.

My clinical perspective

A longevity protocol should begin with measurable basics before adding complexity. Magnesium is often one of those basics: not because it is fashionable, but because cellular energy, neuromuscular function and recovery all depend on adequate mineral status.
